AWAY DAYS - EPISODE 9 - LEEDS

Distance from Coventry Building Society Arena to Elland Road - 118 miles (189km). Travel time 2hr 45 mins

So it’s been 2 weeks since the Ipswich loss, but hopes are up again. The Christmas period is notoriously busy in the UK, with games coming thick and fast. In those 13 days, we beat Birmingham (one of our local rivals) 2-0, and drew 1-1 with Southampton (who are 3rd in the league), but we now face a daunting trip to Leeds. This is a real test. Leeds are 4th. They were in the Premier League last year, and they’ve retained many of their players.

Also, Elland Road is an intimidating place to go. The Leeds fans have a reputation for being a bit tasty. And not tasty like a Greggs sausage roll, but tasty in a way that you wouldn’t be able to taste a Greggs sausage roll if you came across them.

Saying that, Bodgit and Scarpa are a couple of tough boys from the mean streets of Royal Leamington Spa. We eat hooligans for breakfast (that’s a lie, we had Greggs sausage rolls for breakfast. Tasty).

A 10am start. Off to The CBS Arena to board the coach. It’s a cold, December day, but it’s sunny. It feels a bit Christmassy. But there'll be no gifts from Leeds today. Up the M1 we go. The M1 was Britain's first inter-urban motorway, opened in 1959. It is 311km long and stretches from London to Leeds.

We join it at Junction 22, and head North, through Leicester, Nottingham, Mansfield and Sheffield, before leaving at Junction 43 for Leeds. God I’m boring. No wonder Scarpa always sleeps on the coach. Maybe he’s not sleeping. I need to up my game. We arrive in Leeds.

Leeds is a proper Northern industrial town, in the county of Yorkshire. Yorkshire folk say what they like and they like what they bloody well say. The oldest airworthy aircraft in the UK was made in Leeds. Designed by Robert Blackburn in 1912 for Cyril Foggin, the Blackburn Monoplane Type ‘D’ is often called the Single-Seat Monoplane. At that time, it could only fly an individual per flight. Ironically, the people of Leeds still point and stare at aeroplanes. They’re a simple folk.

Hey. Great fact. Benjamin Henry Latrobe, a neoclassical architect from Leeds, redesigned the Capitol Buildings in DC. Not in the same way as The Proud Boys redesigned it. Benjamin wasn’t a prat.

Last one. The Kaiser Chiefs are from Leeds. They had that song ‘I Predict A Riot’. Talking of which…… We anxiously step off the coach at Elland Road. There’s no sign of a riot. There is, however, a sign for a chippy located directly opposite the away end. Remembering that the diet starts on 1st Jan, we made our way to said chippy. In our best Northern accent, we order. Northerners do the best fish and chips. Really, they do. And these didn’t disappoint.

Satisfied and happy, we made our way into the ground. We join 35,000 other fans, with Coventry making up 4,000 of those. It’s the City boys making all the noise, but expectations are low. The teams emerge from the tunnel to a deafening welcome. It’s all Leeds, they’re knocking the ball around. They take an early lead. This could be a long afternoon. However, Leeds may have the stars, but they don’t have the City spirit. City fight back to draw level. We go crazy. With the last kick of the game, Leeds have a great chance to finish the game off. We hold our breath. There is a split second of complete silence. The ball goes wide. The whistle goes.

We make a quick escape. With a point and our lives.
