WEMBERLEY (part 1!)

WEMBERLEY (part 1!)

Que sera sera, whatever will be will be……

Stop the press, hold the phones, quite possibly the best news ever. Coventry City FC (see previous blog) have made it to the Championship Playoff Final. Ok, so maybe not the best news for you, but certainly great news for Coventry City fans everywhere, including our very own gaffer, Sammy. And the final is this Saturday, 27th May. It’s massive…….

I’ll explain. The Professional Football League (again, see previous football blogs….I’m only going to say it 1 more time….it’s football, not soccer) in the UK is split into 4 divisions. Not based on geography, but on ability (and Dirty Oil Money if you’re Man City, Chelsea or Newcastle). You may have heard of The Premier League. That’s the top league, with well known teams such as Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool, and lesser known smaller teams like Brentford, Fulham and Manchester United. This league is made up of 20 teams. You then have the next league down, called The Championship. There are 24 teams in the Championship. Then there is League One (24 teams) and League Two (24 teams). Each year, every team in their own league play each other twice, at home and away. Now. Pay attention. At the end of the season, 3 teams get relegated to the lower division, and 2 teams get promoted to the next division up, based on their points tally. Apart from the winners of the Premier League. They are crowned the Champions of the Premier League. Not the World Champions, that’s just arrogant. The final place in the promotion race is based on a playoff system. It gets more confusing, and I’ve lost the will a little bit, but suffice to say, there is a one-off game where 2 teams battle it out for promotion to the pinnacle of club football, The Premier League.

So ‘the best news ever’??? Really?? Well, I did say ‘quite possibly’.

Coventry City FC are playing in the Playoff Final this Saturday against Luton Town. And the Winner of this Playoff Final will be promoted to The Premier League. Coventry were last in ‘The Prem’ in 2001. Since then, they’ve been down to The Championship, League One, then to League Two, and are now on the brink of getting back to the top table. They have been declared bankrupt twice, and had to play their home games away from The Coventry Building Society Arena for 3 seasons due to a fallout with their stadium owners. It would make a great Netflix series, but Deadpool beat us to it. Oh, and by the way, Coventry actually lost to Wrexham in the FA Cup this season. If at this point, you have no idea what’s going on, turn Fox Sports on and watch steroided muscle men wearing helmets trying to kill each other. And relax.

Anyway, this season, no-one gave Coventry City a chance of getting promoted, but here we are, 1 game away from being Premier League. The showpiece final is being played at Wembley, the Home of Football, so yesterday, Sammy is jumped on a plane, flew to London, and will be taking her seat to watch The Sky Blues get promoted. And amongst the 40,000 Coventry supporters inside the stadium, shouting, screaming, singing and swearing, you’ll still be able to hear her.

There will be a blog of the day, along with photos, so look out for that next week. And, at 11.45am, next Saturday, Eastern Time, tune into Fox/Peacock/CBS/Fox to watch and cheer on the ‘City’. You might even spot an Atlanta Sky Blue Army flag that we’ve had specially made.

We can barely contain our excitement. It’s infectious (bleach will cure it). Come on down to the shop this week and Sammy will teach you some of the songs that are sung on the terraces of the famous CBS Arena. If you leave the kids at home, she’ll teach you the naughty ones.

On Monday, Sammy will return. If City win, watch out for our very own Queen's Pantry Promotions (genius). If City lose, well….Monday will be cancelled.

Play Up Sky Blues
